The Council may authorise an individual nurse to either carry out activities or work in an area that would otherwise be outside of his or her practice. For example, some nurses are authorised to supply medications or undertake diagnostic imaging.

Nurses who practise in rural areas without access to a medical radiation technologist may apply to the Council for a condition to practise diagnostic imaging in order to undertake a limited range of x-rays.
Emergency contraceptive pill
Individual nurses may seek authorisation to supply the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) or Levonorgestrel.
Registered nurse prescribing in diabetes
Registered nurses authorised to prescribe in diabetes health are authorised under: Medicines (Designated Prescriber – Registered Nurses) Regulation 2016. More information is available here
