Q: What is the postal address for the Nursing Council?

Q: I would like to find out if my old friend who is a nurse is still practising?
A: You can look up your friend’s name on the public register of nurses here. If the nurse is practising, the register will show his or her name. The Nursing Council cannot provide details but if you would like to send a letter to the Council we will forward this to the last known address, click here.
Q: How many registered nurses are there in New Zealand?
A: There are approximately 47,000 nurses currently practising.
Q: What courses and programmes does the Nursing Council offer?
A: The Nursing Council does not offer courses or programmes. Courses and programmes leading to registration as a nurse are offered by tertiary education institutions that have been accredited by the Nursing Council. Accredited programmes include Masters, Postgraduate Diplomas, Postgraduate Certificates, Bachelor and Diploma Programmes that lead to registration in a scope of practice. Q: I would like to buy one of your publications. How do I do this?

Q: I want to research some family history and find out more about my relative who was a nurse in the past. Can you help me and how do I do this?
A: The hard copy register of nurses is held in the Archives New Zealand Wellington office on behalf of the Council. The register of nurses from 1901 – 1925 is publicly available to be viewed in the archives offices. The remainder of the register is restricted access. Persons wishing to access restricted information should apply in writing to the Registrar of the Council. The Archives website also has a section specifically designed to assist those who are attempting family history research http://www.archives.govt.nz/family-historians Enquiries regarding an individual nurse’s work history in specific hospitals should be directed to the individual hospital or DHB in question.
Q: I would like to make a complaint about a nurse. How do I do this?
A: Complaints about a nurse should be made in writing to the Registrar of the Council or to the Health and Disability Commissioner email address link. You can download a pamphlet, which has detailed information about the complaints process, click here.
