Return to Practise
Q: Who offers Competence Assessment Programmes (CAP)?
A: CAPs are offered by DHB’s, educational institutions and private providers. Click here for a list of providers.
Q: How much do they cost?
A: It is up to individual providers to determine the costs of the programme.
Q: How long are they?
A: Programmes vary in length up to twelve weeks.
Q: How often do CAPs run?
A: This varies as some programme providers run a programme every couple of months and others may only run one a year. You will need to discuss this with the provider.
Q: Why are there delays in gaining a place on a CAP?
A: It depends on the demand for programmes from both New Zealand and overseas registered nurses.
Q: Are there any differences between programmes?
A: All programme providers are accredited and monitored by Nursing Council against a set of standards.
Q: Can I choose where my clinical placement is during the CAP?
A: This varies between programme providers and you will need to check this when you apply to a programme.
Q: I have a background in education/policy/research/management. Can I do a CAP and return to this area of practice?
A: You will need to check if the programme provider is able to offer you this option.
Q: Is the CAP the same for all Registered Nurses or is it different depending on the conditions in scope of practice?
A: Most programmes have similar content for all participants with the difference being in the clinical placement area. If you have a condition in your scope of practice the placement will take this into account.
Q: I live in an area where there are no Return to Practice Programmes offered. What can I do to return to practice?
A: In some situations it is possible for a nurse to be able to negotiate with a DHB or other healthcare provider and the Nursing Council to be offered an individual return to practice programme. This programme is designed by the DHB or healthcare provider and covers the same content as the Nursing Council approved programmes. The individual programme has to be approved by the Registrar/Chief Executive, Nursing Council prior to commencement.
