How to apply for an authorisation
The Council may authorise an individual nurse to either carry out activities or work in an area that would otherwise be outside of his/her practice. For example some nurses have authorisations to supply medications or undertake diagnostic imaging.
Emergency contraceptive pill
Individual nurses may seek authorisation to supply the emergency contraceptive pill or Levonorgestrel. Download for the application form and guidelines.
Diagnostic Imaging
Nurses who practise in rural areas without access to a Medical Radiation Technologist may apply to the Council for a condition to practise diagnostic imaging in order to undertake a limited range of x-rays. Download the application form (PDF) and information sheet (PDF).
Nurse Practitioner Prescribing
Nurse practitioners seeking registration with prescribing rights are required to have successfully completed an approved prescribing component of the clinically focused masters, programme relevant to their specific area of practice. For the guidelines click here.
