Result of consultation on Ophthalmology Schedule for proposed Designated Prescriber: registered nurses practising in primary health and specialty teams
19 November 2015
In August 2015, the Nursing Council formally consulted on a proposed schedule of medicines for registered nurses working in specialist ophthalmology teams Designated Prescriber: Registered nurses practicing in primary health and speciality teams. This consultation was limited to the specialist ophthalmology schedule of medicines.
The majority of submitters were supportive of suitably qualified and experienced registered nurses being able to prescribe when working in specialist ophthalmology teams and were supportive of the proposed schedule of medicines.
As a result of this consultation the Council recommends that continuation prescribing of diclofenac ocular is added to the proposed schedule of medicines for nurse prescribers working in specialist ophthalmology teams and that ganciclovir gel is included for nurses working in specialist ophthalmology teams only if it becomes an approved medicine in the future.
