Returning to Nursing during COVID-19 Pandemic

18 March 2020

As of Sunday  26 September 2022 the Government no longer requires nurses to follow the mandatory vaccination requirements. The Nursing Council is maintaining this page as a historical record only. Please note that an individual employer might still have vaccination requirements and is permitted to ask about your vaccination status. If you are not vaccinated we recommend that you discuss this with any potential employers.

Tēnā koutou katoa,
The COVID-19 pandemic situation in New Zealand continues to evolve. The Ministry of Health is seeking assistance from nurses who have a lapsed APC and may like to return to nursing for a limited time to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is likely that the work will include providing initial and on going advice to the public and undertaking the tracing of people who have been in close contact with a person with COVID-19.

The workforce requirements are likely to change over time and if you have recent  clinical experience you may be asked o work in a more specialised area. We will continue to update you via our website and send you e mails as more information is available.

If you would like to return to nursing during this time the Nursing Council is able to reissue your Interim Practising Certificate (IPC) until 31 December 2020 with the condition of restricted practice for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will be no fees associated with the re-issue of your IPC and you will be required to complete the necessary public safety declarations.

To request an IPC please either email us on [email protected] or phone 04 385 9589.

For additional information regarding working during a pandemic please refer to the NZNO frequently asked questions and for all information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic please refer to the Ministry of Health website.

The Nursing Council would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your contribution to protecting and caring for New Zealanders during these difficult times.

Ngā mihi
