Please refer to the CGFNS Applicant Portal for more information – click here.

I do not have two years’ post registration experience. Can I still apply?

If you have not worked as a nurse for at least two of the last five years, you will still be able to apply to the CGFNS Credentials Verification Service, but the decision made by the Nursing Council may be affected, including your application being declined.
If you have no nursing experience, you are not eligible to apply to the Nursing Council.

Why do I need to complete the CGFNS credentials verification process?

CGFNS International Inc specialises in verifying and authenticating documents.

What is the Nursing Council application fee? Do I need to pay an additional fee to CGFNS?

How long will this process take?

Credentials verification will take approximately 30 days once all required documentation has been received by CGFNS. The Nursing Council assessment and registration process is then expected to take up to 65 days once you have responded to their invitation to apply.

English Language Requirements

In order to register with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, you must satisfy us that you are able to communicate effectively, and that your ability to communicate in and comprehend English is sufficient to protect the health and safety of the public.

The Nursing Council approved English language tests are Occupational English Test (OET) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For OET you must achieve a minimum score of 350 for each band (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

For IELTS you must achieve a minimum score of 7 in each band (reading, writing, listening and speaking) of the academic test.

You can achieve the minimum score in the English language tests over more than one sitting, however the required score must be met within 12 months of first sitting the test, and less than three years after your CGFNS report is submitted to Nursing Council.

Please note that the Nursing Council of New Zealand does not currently accept online computer-based tests. However, computer-based tests administered in an approved testing centre are accepted (this includes the OET on computer at venue with speaking sub-test hosted online).

English Test Waiver

A waiver is an alternative means to demonstrate English language proficiency. Approval of an English test waiver is at the sole discretion of the Council and is assessed by the Council on an individual basis. You will be invited to apply for a waiver by CGFNS if your application meets one or both of the following criteria:

Nursing Qualification

Your education that led to registration as a nurse was taught and examined in English in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Ireland, Canada, or the United States of America.

The Council may require you to provide evidence that you completed your nursing education in English; for example, a transcript from your education provider.

OR

Nursing Registration

You have current nursing registration in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Ireland, Canada or the United States of America that required you to pass an English language test.

The Council may require you to provide evidence that demonstrates you have completed an English language test to gain registration.

Each waiver is assessed on an individual basis and the waiver is granted at the sole discretion of the Council. Additional evidence to support your waiver application may be requested by the Council. Please note that this process may extend assessment timeframes. If the waiver is declined, you will be required to demonstrate language proficiency through an approved English language test.

How do I apply for registration?

Once your credentials have been verified and authenticated by CGFNS you will be invited to apply to the Nursing Council.

Do I need to submit my documents to Nursing Council?

CGFNS will send all the documents you have provided directly to the Nursing Council.

Do I need to complete a criminal record check?

Yes. The Nursing Council will tell you how and when to do this.

Can I withdraw my application?

You can withdraw your application at any stage. However, all fees you have paid are non-refundable.
